On a gray, rainy, cold Los Angeles day, I lie back in my comfy chair listening to the sweet melodic sounds of “Wash U Clean” by Beth Thornley- a singer/songwriter, whose songs have been featured in movies and TV shows like “The Perfect Man,” “Scrubs,” and “Felicity.”
With a blanket over me and my kitten snuggled up next to me, the album starts with the title track, “Wash U Clean,” and it catches you in immediately. A snappy, poppy song, with a great sax piece running through.
My favorite track on the album is “It’s Me.” A piano and guitar driven song, it speaks to the social awkwardness that we all have. Beth sings “Cause I laugh before the punch line/Out of place and at the wrong time/Tangled up again in my own feet.” I know for me that this is a perfect description of my own quirks.
“Never Your Girl” is a country–tinged, heartbreaking ballad. I really liked this song for it’s honest beauty and it’s musical arrangement.
An interesting track is “You’re So Pony” – a synth, electronic pop song. I was instantly reminded of The Ting Ting’s song “That’s Not My Name.” “You’re So Pony” is a fun track and brought a touch of summer on a rainy, winter day.
“A To Z” is a fun, happy-go-lucky song and closes out the album nicely.
Beth reminds me of Aimee Mann or Beth Orton- a powerful, honest voice with powerful, honest lyrics. “Wash U Clean” is Beth’s third album and I really believe that she is an artist you should listen to you. I was curious about her other albums, so I listened to Beth’s cover of “Eleanor Rigby” on “My Glass Eye” and she does a beautiful job on the track by adding a country flare.
Beth is a memorable artist and I look forward to hearing more from her.
