Pete Yorn @ The Bootleg Theater

I’ve always like Pete Yorn, he’s like Eddie Vedder with focus. Pete’s not afraid to write quality songs, and it’s a mystery to me why I was seeing him @ The Bootleg, as opposed to an arena.

Karen, our photographer hooked this one up, as she’s been friends with Pete for a while. I bring this up because Pete stopped mid-song, looked over at us in the front row, and said, “Oh… Hey Karen!” – That and the fact that we were close enough to be standing on top of him made for a really cool show. Pete is a hell of a performer, with his Jersey-man charm and epic songs. If you haven’t seen Pete live, you’re missing out.

Pete was a little nervous for the first two songs; I say this because he sung “Strange Condition” an octave higher than normal, but he calmed down a little for the duration of his career-spanning set. He pulled gems off of all four albums, plus a cover of “Moon River.” In addition to song craft, Pete’s got a knack for picking great backing musicians. Zack, Pete’s bass player may have looked like a porno creep, but he held down the bass like a true rock star and had the backing vocal chops of a perfect tenor – and the guitar player was so into the music that he broke a string during the first 45 seconds of the first song; if that’s not rock, I don’t know what is!

America! Stop listening to whiny-voiced singers, and go pick up a copy of “Back and Fourth”

Craig Wedren of Shudder to Think opened, and he’s still got it after all these years! Having the same amount of hair he had in the 90s, Wedren regaled the audience for what seemed like hours. He and his band played around with vocal effects and electronics, creating a radiohead, meets Husker Du, meets Nine Inch Nails, sort of vibe. Very cool band!
