Downtown Los Angeles, 12/6/2009 – With the music industry going through one of the greatest upheavals to ever hit the books, musicians are pioneering new ways of getting their music to the fans, and sometimes, they even pull ideas out of the “back catalog” and give it a fresh face. That’s exactly what Divine Intervention Society, or DIS, did on Sunday, December 6th in Downtown L.A.
Blasting the refreshingly old-school-with-modern-sensibilities beats of their new single, “Moon Walk My ADIDAS,” musicians O Brown, Christian Wicks, and Cameron Candelaria placed the final touches on their music video for that track on Sunday. Designed to mesh the old with the new, and bring together a diverse cast of performers, the video features a decidedly retro look filmed in an in-your-face modern style. O Brown has worked with seminal rap and hip hop artists like B Real of Cypress Hill (on both Gunslingers mix tapes), so he sported a classic fro complete with hair pick, and sauntered about with his dull-gray ghetto blaster. Drummer Cameron Candelaria (known for his album October Sky, as well as for working with Crazy Town) pulled out a styling bike and performed some tricks on his skateboard, and DJ and fashion entrepreneur Christian Wicks kept up the steely-eyed demeanor of the villainous right-hand man throughout the shoot, even through his badass sunglasses. This is a crew that oozes personality while they are crushing people’s eardrums with their brand of sonic wizardry.
As you’ll see in the pictures — and probably more so in the final video — there was a diverse cast of people on set, which accentuates the universal appeal of DIS’ fantastic sound. People of all walks of life came down, from actors and actresses to dancers and acrobats. A fleet of Volkswagen Bugs were on hand to provide a shockingly cool and completely fresh look to the scenery, and they were accompanied by your classic hydraulic-enhanced low-riders and some of the coolest graffiti Downtown’s seen. Special guests include director Michael Scoresaysee (a guy who sets the pace of a bullet train on set!) and Cash Phlow (who has worked with members of Cypress Hill, Wu Tang, Dr. Dre, and several dozen others). When the music kicked in, the break dancers were breaking, the cars were rocking, and everyone from the makeup artist to the director were nodding along with a smile on their face as “Moon Walk My ADIDAS” washed over their music-starved ears.
And what a single “Moon Walk” is! Capturing the perfect blend of old-school Beastie Boys and Run DMC with modern melodic hip hop, DIS sports some serious musical chops. Hit up their MySpace page and get a load of their music: this combo knows how to lay down a track, and it’s a crime they aren’t selling out stadiums, even this early in the band’s life. It’s only fitting that they are using the classic music biz strategy to promote themselves: come up with a great track, and release it as a single to get people’s appetites up for some more. Why wait for the whole full-length album production cycle? “Moon Walk” is targeted for video release through all sorts of venues, not the least of which will probably be CWG TV. And when it drops, it’ll hit the ground running.
