JM: Bruce, Thanks, We appreciate your help with this project. You’re sort of the Swiss Army knife of Rock and Roll. You’re a guitarist, songwriter, arranger and singer and you’re very adept at all of these roles. Before we talk about BK3 directly, how is this album different from your other solo albums and what inspired it?
BK: Well first off thank you! I love the Swiss Army knifes, etc.! As much as I can do many roles, BK3 had to be my best work yet, and that made me submit myself to being “produced” by someone; I trusted with his judgement and talent. So, once Jeremy Rubolino and I started our work on the CD, our commitment was to do the best we could with no compromise, and he could help guide me to my best work possible.
My other solo efforts were much more me working by myself, and that was fine at the time, but BK3 reflects the hard work of reaching for higher goals of songs, and ‘sonics.’ I am very pleased with the results!
JM: You obviously go back a ways with Gene Simmons and Nick seems ready to pick up the torch and
run with it. What was it like working with Gene and Nick?
BK: Whether or not Nick will get into music like his famous Dad remains to be seen, but if this debut performance of him on our song for BK3 is any indication, I think he could be quite successful.
Gene is a seasoned musician, even though you mostly see the “Demon” and the “Mogul.” He has lots of experience in the studio; it was like old times, working efficiently and quickly getting the job done.
Nick was “green” as we say, and he was learning from Jeremy and I. But Nick’s enthusiasm and talent was a joy for me to discover. He’s bright and very funny. Gene and Shannon did well with their kids for sure!
JM: Releasing “Hand Of The King” as the first single is a bold move – How was the decision made?
BK: I love that song, and it was decided by my label in the US. I think that’s a better way to work, as their team of radio people need to feel like they are going with what they think is smart. In my book, a great choice.
JM: “Between The Lines” proves both that you like Pun’s and that you can go Mano-a-mano with
another guitar virtuoso like Steve Lukather and hold your own. The cut sounds like you guys were having some real fun. How did you and ‘Luke’ hook up?
BK: To be honest, I am petrified of Luke! He is a monster on the guitar and an humble sweetheart. Jeremy begged me to ask Luke to appear, and to be honest, I was freaking out… but it was totally the right move. I did my parts in the chorus sections of the song first a week or more before Luke came to the studio. He came in, and we basically asked him to play, and with a bit of discussing a “direction” for the jamming he would do, Jeremy did a fine job editing and comping the best bits. Then I filled in parts to complete the “Mano-a-mano” vibe you hear. Luke was a gem, and that is why he is in the upper elite of guitar players.
JM: BK3 is filled with great cuts and old friends – What was the recording schedule and process like?
BK: Because of my commitments with Grand Funk (in my 10th year gigging with them now!) and other work I like to do, the recording sessions had to fit the schedule. We only really used 50 days in the studio over the course of 3 years… we wrote for a few before that, and of course I’m not counting days of editing Pro Tools files, and mixing/mastering, etc. Jeremy and I did many demos first, and used that as the foundation of many of the songs, and then built the real tracks from there. The results are very pleasing to me!
JM: We’re assuming that you’ll be touring to support the album – What and Who is lined up for the Tour?
BK: It’s too hard right now to know what I will do in that regard. When I have visited outside the US, I have picked up talented bands that love KISS and want to help support me. In the US, I have many good musician friends to choose, but I have to see what comes up for me before I announce any players.
JM: What’s going on with your other projects?
Besides Grand Funk shows, the Rock And Roll Fantasy Camp is always rewarding work, and obviously I do sessions and write songs for many people that I admire. This year will be more of the same, except I have a new CD for everyone to hear that I am VERY proud to support.
