This is an unusual article for me. I normally write about musicians and artists. Today, I’m here to present you with a different type of artist. I came across an originator, a creator, a lover of art and music. I checked out his art and his product and I was so intrigued I decided I had to write about him. I had to use my column to help him be heard.
His name is Patrick Scott and he designs, creates and sells his custom drum creations.
His creations do not change the sound of the drum or the instrument. They change the look and, in the right hands, the attitude of the drum and the musician using them.
They are primarily for metal players but, per request, could be made for anyone.
Here’s a description of the product from the creator himself, Patrick:
“First thing I should say is… Sometimes, the only reason to build something is, there is no reason to build it.
I think that’s called art.
I showed my completed skull lugs snare drum to a drummer friend and he said, “What are you 13?”… and I knew I was on to something. They make me smile and it’s just stupid. If I have to explain it, you shouldn’t be buying it.
I’ve spent most of my life as an artist and a musician, always doing something weird to drums. This idea came from building props for TV and movies. I carved an original skull, large enough to fit over the drum tension lugs, built a mold to make copies and poured resin into the mold along with the original drum lug. A little trial and error, and finally ended up with enough for my own snare (the white marine pearl pic). I’m still trying different paint ideas, but really like the just dug up look so far.
I added a little Metalflake to brighten them up because they just needed some sparkle. They are a solid piece with no rattles. They don’t change the sound of the drum or make you a better player, but they are EVIL.
I sell them at $15.00 each using the lugs from the clients snare drum.”
