Location: Sacramento, CA - Bio: I was born and raised in Sacramento before going to college at the University of Oregon. After graduating with a degree in Journalism in 2009 and not being able to find a decent job to stay in town or make the move to Portland (my favorite city), I headed back home to save some money and build my resume. Aside from music, I enjoy craft beer and good books, and when I can match all three, it makes for a very good night. - Likes: My main love and area of expertise will always be metal and all of its sub genres (thrash, progressive, doom, death, black and anything else heavy), but my tastes have steadily expanded to include just about anything. More specifically, pop, jazz, indie, hip-hop, hardcore and electronic music have kept me busy exploring their respective sounds, scenes and histories as of late. - 10 favorite artists in alphabetical order: 27, Agalloch, Cynic, Death Cab for Cutie, Don Caballero, Isis, Kyuss, Minus the Bear, Pig Destroyer, Tragedy - Twitter - Facebook - Website -

The Devil’s Blood – The Time of No Time Evermore

The Devil’s Blood – The Time of No Time Evermore
Like metalcore and nü metal (gasp!) before it, retro hard rock seems to be a trend as of late. As in any sudden infestation of a niche genre, you’ve got your contrived, popular acts who have taken the sound to its marketable conclusion; Wolfmother and, increasingly, The Sword, fall into this bracket....

Frames- Mosaik

Frames- Mosaik
Paul the Oracle Octopus of Oberhausen may have correctly predicted the outcome of every World Cup match in which ze Germans played, but it’s unlikely the supposedly psychic cephalopod could have foreseen a band of his own countrymen representing Deutschland as contenders in the art rock world once...

East of the Wall- Ressentiment

East of the Wall- Ressentiment
After more name changes than Prince (or “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince” or whatever he’s going by these days) and a side-project that essentially became an alter ego for just about all of its members, East of the Wall finally decided to go all Tony Stark on us, effectively declaring, “We...

Isis- A Live Review

Isis- A Live Review
“This one is for those of you who have been with us for the long haul,” said Aaron Turner before banging out the opening riff of “Collapse and Crush” from his band’s debut full-length, 2000’s Celestial. It was only the fourth song in Isis’ June 4 set at San Francisco’s Great American...

Canvas Solaris- Irradiance

Canvas Solaris- Irradiance
While fellow Georgian heavy hitters Mastodon, Baroness and Kylesa practice Thin Lizzy twin guitarmonies and figure out which settings on their amps make their albums sound like they were recorded in the 70s (not that there’s anything wrong with that, to quote the great philosopher Jerry Seinfeld),...

D.I.S- Critical Failure

D.I.S- Critical Failure
Now, for the Neurosis back patch, the case of Pabst Blue Ribbon and a month of free squatting privileges at your local co-op, what kind of music do D.I.S. play? If you guessed D-beat punk, you’ve just won the whole package! But if you assumed these bruisers shred and stomp from an outpost in either...

Nachtmystium – Addicts- Black Meddle, Part II

Nachtmystium – Addicts- Black Meddle, Part II
Nachtmystium’s metamorphosis from kult basement black metal act to eclectic psych-metallers is the US scene’s equivalent to Ulver’s stylistic path through electronic and avant-garde to the everything-and-the-kitchen-sink sound they’ve finally reached. Just as Kristoffer Rygg (known as Garm in...

The Rosetta Interview

The Rosetta Interview
CWG: Your new album, A Determinism of Morality, drops in three weeks. It’s been getting great advanced press from reviews and everything. Are you guys happy with it? David: I honestly think it’s the best thing we’ve ever done. We really focused on songwriting. We recorded with Andrew Schneider...

Rosetta- A Determinism of Morality

Rosetta- A Determinism of Morality
“Je N’en Connais Pas la Fin”, the second track on Rosetta’s third full-length, record, A Determinism of Morality, translates from its native French into, “I do not know the end of this.” Pretty fitting for a band whose tracks seem to have neither origin nor conclusion, often drifting...

Minus the Bear- Omni

Minus the Bear- Omni
Minus the Bear are now officially a band of 30-year-olds. If you’ve been a part of the Seattle quintet’s rabid fan base, I will give you a second to process that statement. If, however, you’re relatively new to the band, that means the rowdy group of twenty-somethings previously concerned only...
